Project costs and quotes

Plan your budget around the work you need.

A useful kitchen quote connects the price to a clear result. What can stay? What needs replacing? Which finishes and practical improvements matter most? Start with those questions, then discuss the scope with Leon. Bathroom and laundry projects can be considered on their own or alongside a kitchen.

Why there is no single price for every kitchen

A kitchen with suitable existing cabinetry and a workable layout presents a different starting point from a room that needs rebuilding. Even kitchens of similar size can involve different amounts of replacement, preparation and associated work. A headline figure cannot describe all of those differences.

This page helps you prepare for a quote rather than calculating a price. If you have a budget in mind, share it alongside your priorities. Explain what you most want to improve and which choices you could reconsider. That makes the discussion more useful than selecting finishes first and finding out later that the scope does not match your plans.

What stays and what changes

The first question is how much of the existing room can usefully remain. Suitable cabinet structures may support a makeover approach. Damaged components, a substantially different layout or extensive storage changes can lead to a broader renovation scope. Retaining something only helps if it supports the result you want.

Be specific about doors, panels, drawers, hinges, handles and benchtops. Ask which elements will remain or be replaced, and whether suitable cabinet doors and panels can be resurfaced. Smart Makeover’s resurfacing scope is suitable cabinet doors and panels, with bathtub resurfacing also subject to assessment. Do not assume that every existing surface can receive the same treatment. Include damaged areas, parts you want to retain and any changes to appliance positions in your photos and notes.

Selections turn an idea into a specification

A description such as modern kitchen leaves plenty open to interpretation. Door finishes, benchtops, hardware, fittings and appliances need enough detail for you to understand the proposal. Different selections can change both the work involved and what is supplied.

Bring reference images to explain your taste, then ask which products and finishes the quote actually covers. If you are considering appliances, share their dimensions and installation requirements before committing to purchases. If an item is yours to supply, confirm that clearly. Make sure the selection you are comparing is the selection you expect to receive. Clarify the hardware, fittings and accessories included, anything you will supply, and how remaining selections will be confirmed.

Look beyond the visible finishes

A complete scope also needs to consider the work around the finished kitchen. Changing the position of a sink or appliance may raise plumbing or electrical questions. Removal and disposal, preparation and access arrangements also deserve attention. Ask which items are included and which require a separate discussion.

Describe access to the property, any stairs or building access requirements, and whether other work is planned at the same time. For a bathroom or laundry, explain what is changing in that room rather than treating it as a small addition to the kitchen quote. Each room needs a clear understanding of its existing condition and proposed work.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Put the proposals beside each other and check the scope before judging the totals. If one keeps an element and the other replaces it, you are comparing different work. If a product description is unclear, ask for clarification rather than filling in the detail yourself.

A useful comparison makes the remaining questions visible. Note exclusions, items still to be assessed and decisions still to be made. Ask how a requested change to the agreed scope will be documented. If you need to reduce the proposed work, discuss the tradeoffs so that a smaller project still addresses your main priorities. Check quantities as well as product descriptions, then confirm the practical arrangements and next steps.

What to send when requesting your quote

For a kitchen makeover enquiry, send at least three photos from different angles, your suburb and a short description of the changes you want. Add closer photos of any areas that concern you. Mention the things you would like to retain, the appliances you are considering and any relevant access requirements.

If you are still choosing between a makeover and a renovation, say so. You do not need to arrive with a finished design or make that decision alone. Request a quote, or call Leon on 0401 939 291 to start the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a reliable price from photographs alone?

Photographs are a useful starting point, but they cannot show every condition or measurement. Ask Leon what can be discussed from your photos and what needs further assessment before a quote is settled.

Does combining a kitchen, bathroom and laundry guarantee a discount?

Discuss each room’s scope and ask Leon whether any pricing options apply to your project. Do not assume a combined package or discount. Ask for the inclusions and costs of the proposed work to be clear.

Should I choose materials before requesting a quote?

You can bring preferences and reference images without having everything selected. Explain any products you are committed to using, and ask what needs to be chosen or confirmed for the proposal. Check suitability before ordering items yourself.
